TR6 Retrofit for Central AC and Heat Pumps: The Smart Way to Save Energy on Older Systems

Just because you have an old comfort system doesn’t mean you’re stuck paying today’s high energy bills. In fact, your contractor can put energy dollars back into your pocket by simply putting a Danfoss Universal TR6 thermostatic expansion valve into your system. Affordable TR6 technology can boost efficiency by nearly 15%. For example a homeowner with an 8 SEER air-conditioning system can cut electric bills about $100 a year. Plus, a TR6 upgrade enhances system performance to make you more comfortable all season long, as shown in our video.

Get new energy savings your old system

Until now, the only option to improve energy efficiency was to install a new, high SEER system, which could cost thousands of dollars. But thanks to the Universal TR6 retrofit, you can make a very low investment and let your contractor increase your current system’s efficiency by about 1 SEER level.

The energy efficiency of all air conditioning and heat pump units is rated by the Department of Energy (DOE) using a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). The higher the number, the lower the amount of electricity a unit will use. Under federal law, all new systems sold today must have a SEER of 13 or higher.

With the installation of a Danfoss Universal TR6, you can increase the efficiency of an older system by about one SEER level without buying a new system.
How much can you save?

By boosting your system’s SEER, you get more comfort with less electric consumption. The Universal TR6 valve functions like a throttle, automatically adjusting and accurately admitting the right amount of refrigerant so the system runs less frequently. That not only reduces wear and tear on the system for a longer service life, it also conserves energy.

How much electricity will you save? That depends on your utility rate structure, current system design and regional weather variables, but this chart gives you an idea:

* Based on a 3 ton unit running an average of 1500 hrs and a national average utility   rate of $0.95/kWh.

Call your contractor to start saving

A Universal TR6 retrofit is easy to install and can be done as part of a normal pre-season preventative maintenance or service call. A contractor simply installs the valve, replacing the original metering device in the process.

Get the full benefit of a TR6 retrofit by completing the retrofit as soon as possible. To get started, simply request a Danfoss Universal TR6 thermostatic expansion valve by calling your HVAC contractor today.
