Energy Efficiency

The goal is ambitious: Save 4.2 quads of energy by 2030 (1 quad is over 29 billion kilowatt hours). To reach it, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) raised the minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for residential air conditioners from 10 to 13 SEER, requiring a 30% increase in energy efficiency. Not an easy task, and one that requires manufacturers to commit extensive resources to research, redesign, and retool for dozens of products—a costly undertaking.

There are several ways that an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) can increase energy efficiency in air-conditioning equipment. But operations research has demonstrated that the most timely strategy, most cost efficient, and least risky method is to use a thermostatic expansion valve rather than the traditional fixed orifice as a means of regulating refrigerant flow into the evaporator. The relative economy and deliverability of the TXV make it the technological solution of choice to help solve demanding SEER 13 requirements.
Engineering Innovations

The Danfoss TR6 thermostatic expansion valve helps OEMs meet energy challenges by enabling air-conditioning systems to match a cooling demand at any given time. In designs without a TXV, refrigerant flow is regulated by a fixed orifice. Because the size of the orifice remains constant, the flow of refrigerant remains the same regardless of the cooling demand on the system. The result: only average efficiency.

The TR6 design includes a number of features to ensure a long life of efficient service. The sensing bulb charge is carefully optimized for residential air-conditioning. The power element, containing the sensitive valve diaphragm that operates the valve, is laser welded. Because there is much less heat input with laser welding than with traditional plasma welding, the integrity of the diaphragm is not compromised. Danfoss is a pioneer in the use of laser welding, which is also a much cleaner process.

During TR6 manufacturing, automated production and dozens of automated quality checks ensure product consistency and precise adherence to specifications.
