As an example of EnVisioneering at work, Danfoss uses innovative engineering to create the NLV compressor, one of the industry's most advanced, variable speed, hermetic designs. The results are lower operating costs due to 30 to 35% energy savings, fewer installation and maintenance hassles by minimizing manual set point adjustments, and greater quality by reducing temperature "swings" through modulating speed rather than cycling the compressor on and off.

A 1999 energy survey showed that electricity consumption in commercial applications topped 1.08 trillion kWh. At this scale, even small improvements in equipment efficiency will have a big impact. That's why Danfoss developed the NLV variable speed compressor to deliver 30 to 35% energy savings in commercial refrigerator applications.
To achieve higher efficiency, NLV compressors use a specially designed electronic control and a compressor operating in a speed range of 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. A feedback loop from the temperature control, combined with self-learning logic in the electronics, allows the compressor to optimize its speed to match the load and minimize on and off cycling. This "smart" compressor design not only responds to customer demand for greater system efficiency, but also anticipates changes in energy legislation pending in several U.S. states.

In addition to making it easier to save energy, the NLV compressor makes it simpler to setup and operate the system. Other variable speed drives can require a special technician and hundreds of setpoints to be programmed. But the NLV compressor is engineered as a "plug and play" design. Self-learning logic determines the optimum parameters to eliminate extensive manual programming. That makes the Danfoss NLV compressor the smartest choice for AC-operated refrigeration systems where change is a constant.
